In line with the Foodwise 2025 strategy the region is a major target market for meat market access efforts. Rising incomes and changing dietary patterns mean that meat consumption is expected to increase in the region in future. Opening beef market access to markets such as China, South Korea and Vietnam is a very high priority. Trade Missions to Japan and South Korea in 2017 and China, Singapore, Vietnam and South Korea in 2016 re-affirm the importance of the region.
As a major producer and exporter of beef and sheepmeat, this region has not generally been a target region for meat market access. However, pigmeat exports to Australia have grown and beef access was secured to New Zealand in 2016.
